Top Ten Scrubs Moments #4

Scrubs

First airing in 2001, Scrubs continued for nine seasons with 2010 being its official end. While it’s always sad to see a great comedy series call it a day it’s important to appreciate the memories that remain. At the time of writing I have watched and enjoyed seven seasons worth of Scrubs and from those experiences I have compiled what are, for me, the ten best moments. My choices contain many of Scrubs’ magical ingredients:- an obligatory rant from Dr Cox, a taste of the brilliant range of backing music and, of course, those occasions when the laughs are put to one side and the reality of hospital life hits you hard.

Ben’s Funeral

Brendan Fraser guest starred memorably in Scrubs as Dr Cox’s brother-in-law, Ben. Though his relationship with Jordan (Christa Miller) is a pendulum between love and hate, Dr Cox (John C. McGinley) regards Ben as his best friend and is visibly a different person around him. Ben’s first appearance in Scrubs sees him diagnosed with leukaemia but he responds well to treatment and goes into remission.

When Ben returns in Season 3 from months of travel, Dr Cox insists he have a routine check-up. In an episode I will never forget, Dr Cox severely reprimands JD (Zach Braff) after an elderly patient he has been treating dies. Though Ben tries to reason with him and insists JD has done nothing wrong, Dr Cox takes charge of all JD’s patients and dismisses him. Towards the end of the episode Dr Cox, JD and Ben are smartly dressed and heading for a party when Ben asks Dr Cox to forgive himself for what happened at the hospital. It’s in this moment that Dr Cox’s conversation with Ben is ended by JD’s intervention and the unwanted words, “Where do you think we are?” Suddenly, Dr Cox and JD are alone, graves stand nearby and the full horror of what’s happened suddenly becomes apparent. The elderly patient we thought had died at the hospital was actually Ben! Dr Cox and JD take their seats at Ben’s funeral and we realise that for the majority of the episode only Ben’s spirit has been present. It’s one of the saddest moments in Scrubs and still stuns me whenever I watch it.
