With the festive season upon us and Christmas just round the corner many of us will have been dusting down those compilations of Xmas songs and revelling in the classics, while cringing at some of the awful hits we would rather forget. To get into the festive spirit I’ve compiled my ten favourite Xmas songs which I’ll be posting daily in the run up to Christmas Day. Many will have you shaking your heads in disbelief, I am sure, but others will hopefully have you singing along. As always, I’d welcome feedback and would be interested in hearing your top 10s.
Chris De Burgh – A Spaceman Came Travelling (1986)
Chris De Burgh’s blend of religion and sci-fi only reached an unbelievable no.40 in the British charts but remains a popular Christmas song despite such overwhelming injustice. Listening to the lyrics it is clearly focussing on the essence of Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, though with an unusual twist in the form of a spaceship visiting Earth rather than the angel Gabriel. This space vessel has travelled for many years through the universe to bear witness to the birth of Christ and to deliver not only beautiful music but a moving message, “Peace and goodwill to all men, and love for the child.”
Chris De Burgh’s song is one I can distinctly remember from childhood and whenever I hear the “La la la” part I always find myself singing along. I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a religious person but I never question the beliefs of others and find it heart-warming that Christmas, whose origins are linked to the birth of Christ, can unite friends and family, if only for one day out of the year. A Spaceman Came Travelling is poignant given that the spaceman has made such a long journey to deliver a message of peace to the world. De Burgh’s song also speaks of the spaceman’s return in 2,000 years to coincide with the prophesised Second Coming of Christ. I think whether you’re religious or not this is still a wonderful Christmas song for the positive message it conveys, if only more could take this to heart.
